Chapter 2

Sarah nodded and licked her lips. She looked as surprised as I felt. It was becoming clear that she hadn’t planned what was unfolding between us, she hadn’t set out to seduce two naive girls into doing her sordid bidding. It was simply happening.

“You understand that, as the stakes increase, so does the challenge?” she said, lifting her glass and taking a slow sip. In my bewildered haze, I noticed a pale smear of lipstick around the rim of her glass. I stared at it, mesmerized by that small, inconsequential detail. She set her glass down.

“We understand,” said Abby, nodding. There was a note of excitement in her voice, anticipation almost. I felt a rush of intense trepidation.

“I’m not a lesbian!” I blurted out suddenly, expressing the fear that was swirling inside me.

Abby turned and glared at me. Sarah too. The older woman raised an eyebrow.

“Why is that important?” said the redhead, leaning her head to one side.

I blinked, surprised by the question. “It’s just—” I began. “I don’t want you to think you’re getting something you’re not. Abby is my best friend, she’s—”

I turned to look at Abby and she stared back at me.

Then, like a stretched elastic band snapping back into shape, I underwent a revelatory moment in my head.

These thoughts aren’t new…

The realization was staggering. I rocked to the side and leaned against the bar. Abby reached out and placed her hand on my back, steadying me.

“Are you okay?” said Sarah, sounding concerned.

I closed my eyes and forced myself to breathe slowly. But with every heartbeat came a new moment of self-discovery.

I felt my mind being whisked away, drifting upwards, then back, revisiting a succession of buried memories, pausing for just an instant at each one, only long enough to realize what I was showing myself: lying awake at night in college, listening to Abby breathing in the bed opposite mine, wondering what it would be like to crawl in there beside her; the slow walk home after prom, heels in hand, hands laced together, swearing that we’d never let any man come between us; accidental touches, innocent between friends, but consequential between nascent lovers. And dreams, so many dreams… dreams in which friendship turned to something else, dreams so shocking they were denied and repressed, pushed beneath the layers of insulation that a conservative upbringing had provided to guard against true, wonderful desire.

I opened my eyes and stared at Sarah, wondering if she had suffered that same deluge of realization, if she had reinvented herself in an eyeblink to become what she truly wanted to be. Or
